In 1993 while working as a hotel receptionist, I decided to do a block of evening classes in cake decorating. As it was approaching Christmas I was taught how to make marzipan fruits, yule logs, pancetta’s made from modelling paste, fondant icing, modelling paste and marzipan. It resulted in me being inspired. That year i made my Dad’s birthday cake.
I eventually left the hotel as I got my dream job, which I had wanted to do since I was about 5. I became Cabin Crew. I used my cake skills to make creations as a small side line. I sold a number of cakes for different occasions such as birthday, graduation, Christmas, New year, hen nights.
To further my flying career I moved south to Essex where my cake skills were still used occasionally, but became less frequent due to work life.
After spending 20 years south of the border, we decided to move back to Banchory 3 years ago. Once again began working at Aberdeen Airport and I found my passion for baking again. On a number of occasions, I would take in a birthday cake, cupcakes, brownies or biscuits, which my work colleagues used to thoroughly enjoy!
When the covid 19 pandemic began, along with lockdown and like so many people, I found myself furloughed. To help pass the time I baked plenty of banana and choc chip muffins with Nutella in the middle, oaty biscuits and various other sweet treats. I found that I needed something else so I began making sugar paste flowers, which I found therapeutic and a joy to make.
After completing a cake for our 5th wedding anniversary and creating a birthday cake for a friend, I received some amazing comments about them. So with some encouragement from my husband and Mum, I took a leap of faith and decided to develop my skills into a business. It became even more of a forefront of my mind when it became clear that I probably won’t be going back to work due to redundancies being made.
I am passionate about everything I bake and cakes I create. I take the time I need to complete projects and ensure that they are of a standard that I would be happy to receive if I was a customer.
If you are wondering about Croaky’s? It’s definitely all in my voice which croaks. It’s part of me that I’ve dealt with for many years. As I would say to passenger who used to say, “hope you get better soon!” or “sounds sore!” and offer a lozanger – “No, it’s not sore!” and “No, I am not ill!”. I always appreciated the concern, but its just me!!!!!
